Conditions to Avoid:                 Avoid contact with acids without good agitation. Exercise care if mixing with water as heat is generated with spattering and boiling.

 

Materials to Avoid:                   Acids will cause violent reaction with heat and gas. Contact with aluminum, brass, tin, zinc creates flammable hydrogen gas. Reaction with reducing sugars creates carbon monoxide.

SECTION 6 – HEALTH HAZARDS – PROTECTIVE MEASURES  – FIRST AID

EYES:              Extremely corrosive to the eyes with possible permanent damage. Use chemical goggles when handling this material. In the event of contact immediately flush with water for 15 minutes. Get immediate medical attention if symptoms develop.

 

SKIN:              Extremely corrosive and destructive causing severe burns with deep ulcerations on prolonged contact. Use rubber or neoprene gloves and apron when handling this material. In the vent of contact immediately wash with water for 15 minutes. Get prompt medical attention if symptoms develop.

 

INHALATION:           Mist or vapors can cause severe irritation or damage to the respiratory system.

 

INGESTION:              Corrosive to the mouth, esophagus and mucous membranes causing severe burns with vomiting, diarrhea and death. Fatal dose is about 5 grams. Drink large amounts of water or milk. DO NOT induce vomiting. Get immediate medical attention.

 

IN ALL CASES:          GET PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IF ADVERSE EFFECTS PERSIST

HYGIENE:      Wash hands and face before eating or drinking. Wash soiled clothing before wearing again if contact occurs.

SPILLS AND LEAKS:            Contain to prevent loss to the environment. Clear area of non-emergency personnel. Collect excess material. Neutralize the residual material and flush to a sanitary sewer.

 

STORAGE AND HANDLING:           Keep containers tightly closed. Store at ambient temperatures.

 

WASTE DISPOSAL:              Follow recommendations of local, state and federal regulations.

 

EMPTY CONTAINERS:        Rinse thoroughly with water. Send to a recycling center or return to Wausau Chemical Corporation.
